Bridge Builders: Volunteer Support for Outpatient Appointments

16 July 2026 By EVOC Communications Team

Bridge Builders is an NHS Lothian programme that supports people to attend and engage in their outpatient appointments. It is inspired by a successful model in Denmark where volunteer support has helped people feel more confident and at ease throughout their healthcare journey.

Bridge Builder volunteers can provide practical and emotional support on the day of an appointment. This support may be helpful for people who:

– Are attending an appointment alone and would prefer some company.
– Have experienced difficulties attending appointments in the past.
– Feel unsure about where to go or how to get to the right place.
– Would benefit from talking things through before or after an appointment.

Referrals and enquiries are welcome from healthcare professionals, third sector organisations, carers, family members and individuals seeking support themselves. For further information about the programme or to make a referral, please get in touch.
