WE ARE now two years from the UK Welfare Reform Act receiving Royal Assent. A lot has changed in that time. Two days, let alone two years, is a long time in politics.
The Government always expected their Welfare Reform programme to come in over a period of time – changes were originally expected to be brought in over about five years, until 2017.
Not everything, though – as everyone knows – has gone according to plan.
The introduction of Universal Credit has been dogged by significant glitches in the IT system. The Work Capability Assessment for Employment & Support Allowance has caused considerable distress, and now contractor ATOS has decided to halt their contract with the Government.
Still, the Reform continues….
Campaigners consistently report horrific tales of sanctions being inappropriately applied. The Twittersphere is replete with stories of deaths attributable to sanctions and other changes included in this Welfare Reform agenda.
