You heard the story about the stories?

9 November 2012 By EVOC Communications Team Leave a Comment

It wuz the Stories wot won it!

After a very expensive, and often pretty nasty, election campaign the U.S. decided to trust President Obama for four more years.

At the end of the day, what was it that tipped the balance towards the incumbent? Was it Romney’s strange approach to taking the family pet on holiday? Was it Obama’s egalitarian approach to healthcare? Pundits can ponder such questions.

One insightful analysis suggests that it was the messaging that made the difference – the Democrats were able to shape (in the jargon) the dominant narrative thus: Bin Laden is dead; General Motors is alive; and Romney looks like the guy who fired your dad so he could ship jobs to China.

True? Probably not entirely.

Effective? Hell yeah!

Stories have the power to win elections. The dominant narrative shapes our shared future.

Next week, the Edinburgh Compact Partnership hosts an event – supported by the Edinburgh Partnership – to tell a new story, to shape the dominant narrative, to clarify ‘an Edinburgh approach’ to ‘building Social Value’

Join us in telling a telling tale: Building Social Value – an Edinburgh approach.

Because it’s a story we All want to belong with.
