Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based approach designed to help people explore and resolve ambivalence about change. From its initial application in alcohol misuse settings in the 1980s it has been successfully applied to a wide range of health behaviour change issues.
This 2-day workshop is designed as a comprehensive introduction to MI. During the workshop, the theoretical basis of MI will be explored and a range of opportunities to practise MI skills and strategies will be offered. It is relevant to anyone who has a role in supporting people to make health and/or lifestyle changes that will improve their quality of life.
The following will be covered:
– How person-centred counselling skills are applied in MI
– Understanding and managing the barriers to change
– Paying attention to the language of change
– Finding motivational “hooks” that influence the likelihood of change
