Simple Steps to Fundraising

« Back to Resources

Whatever the size or nature of your community group, one of your main priorities will be identifying suitable sources of income. Being able to finance your services, activities and projects is crucial to your success as a community group.

Funding for community groups can come from a range of sources including but not restricted to:-

  1. Grants
  2. Fundraising
  3. Donations
  4. Income from trading
  5. sponsorship

This simple step guide looks at the main form of income for many community groups grant funding.

Are you ready for funding?

When applying for funding you will need to ensure your organisation satisfies the basic organisational requirements funders are looking for:

  1. Governance – is there an established organisation structure and committee?
  2. Managing the organisation – is there a structured management system including planning and development, financial management and monitoring and evaluation?
  3. Staff and volunteers – how does the group encourage and support people, and does it meets its legal duties?

Applications will fail if your community group cannot demonstrate best practice and conform to legal requirements.

Sources of grant income

Grant income for community groups can potentially come from a wide range of sources, including:-

  1. Grant making trusts
  2. Government/Local Authority
  3. European grant programmes
  4. National Lottery funding

Before your community group makes any grant application, you will need to have researched potential funders for your planned project and drawn up a list of the most suitable grant sources.

Grant Applications

Making your application stand out so that it is successful is a big challenge – most funders receive far more applications than they can ever fund, and the success of your application will be based on a wide range of criteria. To help make any grant application successful it is a good idea to step back and think about what a funder will be looking for.

Evidence to support your application

Evidence plays an important part of your funding application and you must be able to demonstrate why you require the funding. Evidence could include:

  1. Project plans
  2. Community consultations
  3. Statistics gathered from your own surveys and third party reports
  4. Feasibility studies

The evidence should be presented in a clear and concise way that shows user involvement at each stage.
