Energy Efficiency

« Back to Resources

Maintenance of a building includes day-to-day cleaning and tidying but it also includes the fabric of the building, making sure it is weather proof and energy efficient.

Energy efficiency should start with simple common sense. Adopt no-cost energy saving measures such as:-

  • closing doors – especially at night
  • turning off lights when you leave a room
  • ensuring taps are not left running and fixing dripping taps or leaks as quickly as possible
  • reducing room temperatures wherever possible

Energy Audit

Many older hall buildings can suffer from inadequate insulation and heating making them costly to run and uninviting to use.  An energy audit will look at your current energy use and how efficient it is. It will also identify a range of solutions which would reduce your energy consumption whilst maintaining (or improving) the comfort, and health and safety of the people that use the building.

Some of the solutions may be relatively simple, and they do not need to be too costly, such as:-

  • switching to low energy light bulbs and appliances
  • adding a ‘hippo’ to the toilet(s) to reduce water consumption
  • more major solutions may include:-
    • adding insulation and draught proofing
    • installing heating control systems (not meters)
    • installing a renewable energy heating system

These may mean that your committee will need to plan a fundraising strategy and identify suitable funding sources.  However, the energy audit itself will provide you with valuable supplementary information for any funding proposal.
