Retirement
Prior to September 2011, employers were permitted to retire employees (without having to explain why) when they reached the age of 65. This was known as the Default Retirement Age (DRA). The removal of the Default Retirement Age (DRA) means that in most cases the employee can choose when they will retire.
It may still be possible to retire an employee lawfully at a set age using the Employer Justified Retirement Age (EJRA), however this can only be done provided that the retirement age is objectively justified, meets a legitimate aim, and demonstrates that the compulsory retirement age is a proportionate means of achieving that aim.
