Support for the Third Sector
Volunteers in Scotland can access a range of support services offered through a network of Third Sector support agencies, usually referred to as either:-
- Third Sector Interface
- Volunteer Centre
- Council for Voluntary Service
- Council for Voluntary Organisations
- Voluntary Action
Many of these agencies are themselves incorporated Third Sector organisations and registered charities. They will be governed by a volunteer Board of Directors or management committee, and usually managed on a day to day basis by paid staff.
Whatever name your local Third Sector support agency uses, their services will be based on the four core functions of a Third Sector Interface (as defined by and agreed with Scottish Government):-
- supporting and developing a strong Third Sector
- volunteering development
- social enterprise development
- building the Third Sector relationship with Community Planning
In order to deliver additional services and development activities, most Third Sector Interface need to supplement their Scottish Government core funding through a variety of means including:-
- generating their own income – charging for services such as training or venue hire
- applying for grants from a range of sources
- trading as a social enterprise
