Using Online and Digital Media
Encouraging public donations using digital media will enable your community group to reach a much bigger audience and hopefully attract much more income.
Any fundraising by public donation (also referred to as benevolent fundraising) is subject to the requirements of The Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and The Charities and Benevolent Fundraising (Scotland) Regulations 2009. Compliance is regulated by Local Authorities and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.
Fundraising using Social Media
Social media has a huge audience potential that can take your fundraising to another dimension – often for no cost at all. By using social media you can generate support from people all over the country, and benefit from free market research.
Consider creating, for example, a Facebook page for your organisation. Once you have set up your profile you can link to other online fundraising resources such as JustGiving.
If you or any of your current supporters already have a JustGiving page they can put a ‘donate’ button on their Facebook page, taking Facebook friends and supporters straight to JustGiving to make a donation.
JustGiving – online Fundraising
JustGiving provides online fundraising tools to enable the electronic collection of donations to charities, and includes the automatic reclaiming of Gift Aid on all donations from UK taxpayers. Charities of any size can sign up to JustGiving, thereafter supporters can simply create a JustGiving page (an online sponsor form) and get donations plus Gift Aid (when applicable) sent direct to the charity.
You can have unlimited fundraising pages, which means unlimited fundraising potential. You can also view donations, track payments, and see how much an event has raised in real time. JustGiving fundraising pages can be shared on Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz, Bebo and by email.
JustTextGiving – SMS Fundraising
Setting up JustTextGiving can help large and small charities raise money simply and easily. After signing up (which is free) you simply advertise your Vodafone Individual Code (VIC), thereafter anyone with a mobile phone can make a donation of any size to your charity by text. When a donation is made it is deducted from the donor’s mobile phone credit or added to their mobile phone bill. To be paid your donations monthly by BACS transfer, you simply register your bank account with JustGiving, otherwise, they will be paid by cheque.
