Local Opportunities for Older People (LOOPs) is a partnership-based, localised, citywide initiative, funded by the City of Edinburgh Council, which aims to deliver a proactive infrastructure to support older people to re-engage with a range of Third Sector community-based activities and preventative health initiatives.
This fund is to support organisations to deliver a Community Navigator project in each of the North West and South East of Edinburgh which will support older people within the community to engage earlier with crucial Third Sector preventative health and social activities.
This work will require the development of the following elements of the project, based upon the successful work of Health in Mind (in the South West) and Pilmeny Development Project (in the South East):
An information station provides a regular presence within the community, in the places older people are likely to be, and which is able to provide on the spot or researched signposting advice to people who may approach. Service users are likely to include older people themselves, family members and friends and unpaid carers. For further information, please see the LOOPs Booklet – Signposting Older People to Local Activities.
Health in Mind currently produces an excellent magazine in the South West Locality – Discover South West. This magazine includes a range of articles, quizzes and information about preventative health, activities and supports which are available within the community. We would be keen to see six-monthly copies of a similar magazine produced with a dedicated Locality focus which would be distributed within the area.
Awareness Raising and Community Engagement
From time to time the LOOPs family of initiatives is asked to participate in awareness raising activities and/or community engagement events. We would be keen to see that the provider for this service were able to continue this tradition. Please indicate how many such events your LOOPs Community Navigator might be able to participate with. (Examples include: delivery of in-service training and awareness raising to statutory sector colleagues, collaboration to delivery Living Well in Later Life events coordinated by City of Edinburgh Council)
Publicity and Communications
As part of our ongoing publicity efforts we would be keen to see engagement with other local LOOPs initiatives (e.g. LOOPs Phoneline, LOOPs Hospital Discharge Project, Hospital 2 Home service) to produce shared publicity and comms. Likewise, we require engagement in the production of our soon to be monthly LOOPs Newsletter. Please describe what participation you might be able to achieve.
Within each of the Localities we deliver quarterly LOOPs Networks meetings. These are an opportunity for colleagues, from all sectors who work with older people, to come together to learn and network, communicate and share best practice. At each meeting a number of speakers attend to discuss new projects, relevant local issues and/or current policy changes. We will be looking for your Community Navigator and the local LOOPs Hospital Discharge team to come together to ensure that this is a useful opportunity which is valued by all.
There is £70,000 available for the development of this work which will be shared between the two projects/two localities.
