‘Think Working Carer’ information session was developed by VOCAL (Voice of Carers Across Lothian) to support organisations and managers to enhance their awareness of:
- Who carers are
- The reasons why working carers need their manager’s support
- The benefits for organisations & managers who support carers to remain in work
- The support and services available to the carer through VOCAL.
Approximately 14% of the working population, and therefore, the people who work for your organisation, are also unpaid carers, the highest proportion of these being aged between 45-64 years old with many as ‘sandwich’ carers, i.e. caring for a disabled child as well as an elderly parent, at a stage in their professional lives where they are most likely to have developed the range & depth of skills you require to make your organisation successful.
As our population grows older, more people will be taking on caring responsibilities and learning to balance these with their other commitments including to their employer.
By the end of the session 100% of participants reported that they agreed or strongly agreed that they were more confident in their knowledge around carers, and managing working carers in their teams.
