In my humble opinion - equality should not be confused with sameness. Valuing people equally should mean treating people as unique individuals - not treating everyone as if we were clones of each other.
That said - I must confess to being impressed at just how quickly my blog post has attracted an apparent allegation of Hitler-ism! (see Godwin's Law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law)

Ours, the electorate. We empower the politicians to govern at Westminster, Holyrood and at local level.
Where we collectively fail is in the fact that we do not call our politicians to account other than at election time. This is not good enough and we must strive to establish firmer control by the electorate over the parliaments, councils, whatever.

but we will always have inequalities as long as we are all different I would refer if you'd celebrate our strengths rather than trying to equalize us which is the same as what hitler tried to do. Not that I am saying that is what you are trying to do.

hi Janette, I just stumbled across this press release from Child Poverty Acton Group, which came out about a week before your blog post.

It makes a similar point to your own about people struggling to pay for basic necessities, when it describes the impact of inflation on low income families: “As the price of essentials such as [food, fuel and clothes] rise sharply, poorer families have to make tough choices, not between luxuries and essentials, but between one basic good and another.”

The full text of the press release is available here: http://www.cpag.org.uk/press/2011/181011.htm
